Root

The root is the note that sounds like home — the note of rest, resolution, and stability, not the note of tension and instability.

It is the tonal center: the note that defines the key and gives every other note its identity as a scale degree. We don't hear twelve equal notes but a field organized around this one center — a kind of tonal gravity, established by the harmonic series, repetition, and resolution.

Each note takes on a role of tension or rest relative to the root; that pull is what gives a degree its color. This is why it is perhaps the most common pattern in music, because without emphasizing a root the other notes don't have a color and everything remains gray.

You bring out a root by playing it more often, holding it longer, and placing it at the start of phrases and — most importantly — at their end, by resolving to it. Keeping the same notes but changing which one is the root produces a different key and feel; this is what modes are.

In NoSheet, every game has a root, marked by its note name or a 1, and melodies and chords are generated relative to it.
