Improvisation

Spontaneous problem-solving, and the flow between too easy and too hard

Improvisation is spontaneous problem-solving. You improvise all the time, every time you talk to someone or problem-solve your way through your day. This can be underwhelming when everything feels predictable, dry, and like you're just going through the motions. It can be overwhelming when everything feels unpredictable and chaotic, like you're powerless. The sweet spot is in the middle, when you are neither under- nor over-challenged, when there is a manageable balance of expectation and surprise — then you are in flow, a gratifying and rewarding state.
